How to Write a Results and Discussion Section for a Research Paper

The Results and Discussion section is where most researchers stall. You have spent months collecting data. The tables are ready. The figures are labelled. But when you sit down to write, the blank page stares back.

This is the section that separates a paper that gets accepted from one that gets rejected with a note saying "results are presented without adequate interpretation." This guide gives you a clear, actionable structure that works across engineering, materials science, and applied sciences.


Why This Section Is Different From the Rest

Your Introduction and Methodology sections follow a known script. Results and Discussion demand something different: you must simultaneously report what happened and explain what it means. Many researchers either describe data without interpretation, or make claims without anchoring them to specific numbers. Both are grounds for reviewer rejection.

"Do not just state what the graph shows. Tell the reader why it shows that, and what it means for the field."

A well-written Results and Discussion section does three things at once: it presents findings clearly, interprets them in the context of your study's objectives, and connects them to existing literature.


The Structure That Works

You do not need to separate Results and Discussion into two sections unless your target journal requires it. Most journals in materials science and polymer research accept a combined section. Here is the architecture to follow:

Step 1

Open with a One-Sentence Scope Statement

Before presenting any data, write one sentence that tells the reader what this subsection covers. For example: "This section presents the tensile properties of epoxy and polyester composites at varying bael shell powder concentrations." This anchors the reader and prevents them from losing the thread across a long section.

Step 2

Present the Data With Specific Reference to Tables and Figures

Always cite the table or figure by number as you discuss it. Do not say "the results show an increase." Say "tensile strength increased from 19.58 MPa (pure matrix) to a peak of 26.33 MPa at 15% filler loading (Table 6), representing a 34.4% improvement." Specificity is what peer reviewers look for.

Step 3

Explain the Mechanism, Not Just the Trend

After stating a trend, always answer the question: why did this happen? If hardness increases with filler loading, name the mechanism. Is it because rigid particles resist indentation? Is there better stress transfer at the interface? Reviewers from top journals will reject papers that report trends without mechanistic reasoning.

Step 4

Compare With Literature

After explaining your own finding, place it alongside published work. Use language such as: "This result is consistent with findings reported by [Author, Year], who observed a similar trend in rice husk reinforced polyester composites." If your result contradicts existing literature, that is even more valuable. Explain the discrepancy.

Step 5

End Each Subsection With a Synthesis Sentence

Close each property discussion with a sentence that draws a conclusion. Not a summary of what you said, but a judgement. For example: "Overall, 15% bael shell powder loading represents the optimal concentration for tensile performance in polyester composites." This tells the reader what to carry forward.


Handling Unexpected or Negative Results

Many researchers try to hide poor results or explain them away with vague language. This is one of the most common reasons for rejection. Peer reviewers are experienced enough to notice when data is being minimised.

If your epoxy composites show decreasing tensile strength with increasing filler content, state it plainly. Then explain why. Possible mechanisms include poor interfacial adhesion between the filler and the matrix, particle agglomeration at higher loadings, or surface contamination. Proposing a mechanism, even a tentative one, is far more defensible than ignoring the result.

Common mistake: Writing "the results were slightly lower than expected" without explaining the reason. Reviewers will ask why in their comments. Write the explanation now, in the paper, before they ask.

Language Patterns That Work

Academic writing does not require complex sentences. It requires precise ones. These sentence frames are used consistently in high-impact journals and are appropriate for your Results and Discussion section:

For presenting a trend:

"[Property] increased / decreased progressively from [value] at [condition A] to [value] at [condition B] (Table X)."

For explaining a mechanism:

"This behaviour may be attributed to [mechanism], wherein [explanation of physical or chemical process]."

For comparing with literature:

"A similar trend was reported by [Author (Year)], who observed [finding] in [material system]."

For drawing a conclusion within the subsection:

"These results suggest that [concentration / treatment / condition] is optimal for [property], making [material] a suitable candidate for [application]."


How to Handle Combined Results and Discussion Versus Separate Sections

Check your target journal's author guidelines before you decide. Journals such as Polymer Composites (Wiley) and Industrial Crops and Products (Elsevier) accept combined sections. Journals with a more traditional structure, such as Journal of Applied Polymer Science, may require separation.

If the journal requires separate sections, your Results section should contain only factual reporting with table and figure references. All interpretation, comparison with literature, and mechanistic reasoning moves to the Discussion. If they are combined, you integrate both in each subsection, property by property.


A Common Structural Error: Starting From the Tables

Many PhD scholars write their results section by going through each table row by row. This produces a paper that reads like a data catalogue, not a scientific argument. The reader loses track of the story.

Instead, organise by finding, not by table. Decide what the most important result is. Lead with it. Then move to secondary findings. Your tables and figures are evidence; they support the argument, they are not the argument itself.


Checklist Before You Submit

Before sending your Results and Discussion section to your supervisor or for submission, check each of the following:

Every trend is described with specific numbers and table or figure references. Every trend is accompanied by a mechanistic explanation. Each subsection closes with a synthesis or conclusion sentence. All findings are placed in the context of at least one or two published studies. Unexpected or declining results are explained, not minimised. The section reads as a connected argument, not a list of observations.
